Woods done? Whataya nuts!

Going 0-for-3 on courses where he had won seven of his 14 major championships has some believing this is a turning point in the career of Tiger Woods.

Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News says Woods “now is merely a good golfer.” Bob Harig of ESPN Golf calls Woods “an old 34,” for all the competition he has been through.

Ridiculous.

Here’s what this “merely good golfer” has accomplished during his major-less slump years of 2009 and 2010. Woods has won more money ($11.3 million), more tournaments (six), and had more top-10s in majors (five) than anyone. When others are off their game, they miss the cut. When Woods is off, he’s still good enough to challenge. There’s a huge difference.

As for being an old 34, almost all of the players now on tour have had golf clubs in their hands since they were in pre-school. All came up through the same junior system, playing national and international-level events as teenagers. We only know about Woods’ youth exploits because of all his success.

As for Woods’ major drought, he’s been there before, and worse. From 2002-04, he had three top-10s in 10 starts. His current major-less streak includes five top-10s in seven starts, hardly cause for alarm.

When the PGA Championship tees off next month at Whistling Straits, the favorite will be the most talented and accomplished player in the field — Tiger Woods.
