Louisiana House candidate Katie Darling released a campaign video on Twitter that shows her giving birth, stating that Louisiana “deserves better” as she runs against Minority Whip Steve Scalise.
Darling’s 75-second video details her stance on several major issues, including climate change, education, and the state’s near-total abortion ban, which she says is “one of the strictest and most severe” in the nation.
She said in an interview with the Associated Press that she joined the race at seven months pregnant as a reaction to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in June.
“I wanted to share that this is real for me,” Darling said about her video. “I am literally the one hooked up to the machines and the IVs in the hospital bed, going through childbirth, and nobody else should be deciding how I handle that.”
The caption for the video, posted to Twitter, detailed Louisiana’s state rankings for her focus issues.

“Louisiana ranks 50th in crime, 48th in education, and 46th in health care,” she wrote. “I’m running for Congress to stop this race to the bottom because our children deserve better.”

In the video, she can be seen gripping a hospital bed while in labor, stating that “we should be putting pregnant women at ease, not putting their lives at risk.”
“Louisiana deserves better than the path we’re on,” Darling said in the video. “I want that better path, for you” — with the ad showing her husband in the delivery room. “For her,” as the video shows her 6-year-old daughter. “And for him,” she said directly into the camera from the hospital bed as she held her newborn son.
In another tweet following the video, she added, “We need more moms in Congress.” Her video currently has over 1.1 million views, close to 5,000 retweets, and 24,200 likes.
