Michelle Obama announces more State of the Union guests

A Syrian refugee, the head of Microsoft and the man who brought the case legalizing same-sex marriage will join first lady Michelle Obama for her husband’s final State of the Union address Tuesday.

The three are among a number of additional guests the White House announced the final days leading up to President Obama’s speech.

Jim Obergefell was the plaintiff in last year’s landmark Supreme Court ruling which said states must allow same-sex marriages and recognize same-sex marriage performed in other states. Obergefell brought the case after Ohio wouldn’t recognize his marriage with his partner, John, which had been performed in Maryland.

Michelle Obama will also be joined by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Syrian refugee Refaai Hamo, who lost seven family members when the Syrian government sent a missile through his complex. Hamo fled to Turkey, where he wasn’t able to get a job or health insurance, and after two years obtained refugee status to move to Michigan.

The rest of the First Lady’s guests can be found here. Her box will also include an empty seat in honor of the victims of gun violence over the past year.
