Technology industry professionals from across the world will meet in Maryland this October for the 11th annual State Science and Technology Institute Conference, Maryland state officials announced Thursday.
The conference, which focuses on technology-based economic development strategies, will be an opportunity for Maryland to showcase its successful high-tech industry, said Aris Melissaratos, secretary of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development.
“Maryland’s commitment to technology dominance has resulted in new innovations and jobs in the state’s science and technology industry sectors,” he said.
Maryland, particularly Montgomery County, employs thousands of technology workers and has invested millions in growing the industry. The Maryland Technology Development Corp. funds multiple startup technology companies each year and is consistently ranked as one of the most active venture funds in the state.
The state was awarded the 2007 conference, which will be at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel in Baltimore Oct. 18 and 19, after a formal bidding process where they competed against a number of other states. The conference is one of the most respected in the technology industry and the institute selects host states with a proven track record in the technology industry.
“[Maryland] has made science and technology a central focus for its economic development investments,” said Dan Berglund, president and chief executive of the State Science and Technology Institute. “And proximity to Washington, D.C., ensures a focus from national policymakers.”
