Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is officially heading to Washington after an easy victory Tuesday.
The Associated Press called the race to represent New York’s 14th Congressional District for Ocasio-Cortez Tuesday night, when she was ahead of Republican opponent Anthony Pappas with 77.9 percent of the vote and 65 percent of precincts reporting.

Ocasio-Cortez, 29, is the youngest woman elected to Congress, an accomplishment achieved on a night where Democrats Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar also became the first two Muslim women to win their congressional campaigns. The previous record was held by Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., who was elected to office when she was 30.
Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America who ran as a Democrat, became a national figure in the progressive movement following her shock defeat of incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley, a 10-term congressman and No. 4 Democrat in the House, in their primary in June. Her district takes in part of Queens and the Bronx.
The former campaign worker for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential bid, ran on a bold platform that advocated for “Medicare for All,” minimum wage measures, and abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
