Redskins notes: Beck remains limited

1. Quarterback John Beck remained limited because of his sore groin. He participated in everything but the 11-on-11 work, but that’s also when the offense executes bootlegs and rollouts. Beck injured his groin Saturday.

“I was hoping it would be one of those things where I’d take Sunday off and it would be good,” he said. “I’ve never dealt with an injury like this. We’re just trying to figure out what the right decision is.”

Beck said he remains uncertain if he’ll be able to play Friday vs. Pittsburgh.

“I don’t think it’s serious, but you don’t know,” Shanahan said.

2. The Redskins released their first depth chart, but I wouldn’t put much emphasis on it until after the games begin. Nonetheless, Rex Grossman was listed as the first quarterback.

“Everyone knows this is a competition and will last through training camp,” Grossman said.

“There’s still a lot of camp left,” Beck said.

3. Wide receiver Brandon Banks left practice midway through and had a large bag of ice on his sore left knee.

“He’s going to keep on doing that,” coach Mike Shanahan said. “It swells up every once in a while. It’s been quite sore for some time. He went out there and was practicing good. So hopefully he can stay healthy and won’t miss any time.”

4. Safety O.J. Atogwe remained sidelined with a strained left hamstring. He was joined on the sidelines by Artis Hicks, who had a mild concussion. “He should be OK, but it should be a day or two,” Shanahan said. Yes, Malcolm Kelly remains sidelined.

5. Safety Kareem Moore said he could return to practice soon.

“They want me to make sure I do it right this time,” he said. “I’ve been doing OK with all my cuts so probably next week or the end of next week I should be back out there practicing.”

6. Running back Tim Hightower had a fumbling problem in Arizona (eight lost in the past two years combined); he’s brought it to Washington. Hightower has fumbled several times since arriving in a trade.

“A few of those have been on handoffs  and we hand it off differently,” Shanahan said. “And he runs quite hard. We’ll just keep on practicing and have people try to strip the ball and hopefully it will eliminate the problem.”

7. And rookie receiver Leonard Hankerson has had issues with his hands. He dropped two more Tuesday.

“Drops are usually an indication of bad hands or concentration,” Shanahan said. “But he has a very big upside. Sometimes he’s looking to turn up field. But in time it’s very natural for him to catch the ball because he has great hands.”

8. Shanahan said he will probably approach the first preseason game differently in terms of playing time. However, he has not yet settled on a rotation for the game.

9. What does it mean that Mike Sellers is listed fourth on the depth chart at tight end? Shanahan has a good answer. “He’s fourth on the depth chart.” See? For now, the depth chart is fairly meaningless.

10. Shanahan did have this to say about Sellers: “He’s very good on special teams and for him to play tight end and H-back gives us more flexibility on game day to use him in various ways. He’s adjusted well. It took him a couple days to get out of the comfort zone at fullback.”

11. Rookie safety DeJon Gomes has flashed a little of late, but don’t get too excited. Shanahan made sure of that.

“It’ll be a while for DJ,” he said. “That’s a learning experience at safety, playing strong and free. A lot of adjustments with the motions and shifts. He has a lot of catching up to do, that’s typical of that position.”
