Condoleezza Rice to fundraise for Rob Portman

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will headline a fundraiser for Ohio Sen. Rob Portman on Thursday in Toledo with less than a month until Election Day.

A spokesperson for Portman’s campaign confirmed to the Washington Examiner that Rice, who Portman worked with in the George W. Bush administration, will headline a fundraiser Thursday afternoon at the Inverness Country Club in Toledo. In a statement, the campaign announced that Rice will also meet with interns working on the campaign.

“While Ted Strickland’s recent struggles and poor performance have Democrats conceding that he will lose, Rob’s campaign continues to gain momentum,” Portman spokeswoman Michawn Rich told the Examiner. “We are honored to have Secretary Condoleezza Rice in Ohio to help us raise well over $300,000 in a single day and meet with our interns, who have contacted over 4.4 million voters.”

Throughout the 2016 race, Rice has remained largely on the sidelines, although she decided last weekend to call for Donald Trump to withdraw from the campaign in the wake of a leaked video showing the GOP nominee making lewd remarks on a hot microphone. She also said that Trump “should not be president.”

Portman has announced that he will no longer be supporting Trump. According to the latest RealClearPolitics average, the Ohio Republican is leading Strickland, the former governor, by 14.5 points.
