A copy of a children’s book written by Vice President Kamala Harris was spotted at a migrant children’s shelter in Long Beach, California.
A White House official told the Washington Examiner that the book was part of a citywide donation effort to collect books and toys for the children and that Harris was not aware of it. Superheroes Are Everywhere was published by Philomel Books in 2019. Amazon sells Harris’s book for $11.85.
The vice president’s book is pictured on a cot at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, where migrant children are being housed.
The Washington Examiner reached out to the region’s acting director for Health and Human Services, the book’s publisher, and the American Library Association for more information but did not receive a response.
President Joe Biden is making Harris a point person on immigration issues, he announced March 24.
“I’ve asked her, the VP, today, because she’s the most qualified person to do it, to lead our efforts with Mexico and the Northern Triangle and the countries that help — are going to need help in stemming the movement of so many folks, stemming the migration to our southern border,” he said.
Republicans have criticized Harris for not visiting the southern border.

“So, as I mentioned to the experts, the president has asked Secretary Mayorkas to address what is going on at the border,” Harris said April 14 when asked if she had a trip planned. “And he has been working very hard at that, and it’s showing some progress because of his hard work. I have been asked to lead the issue of dealing with root causes in the Northern Triangle, similar to what the then-vice president did many years ago.”
The surge of migrants coming to the border increased in 2021 under the Biden administration, though the influx predated him and started under the Trump administration. Nearly 25,000 children are in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection or the Department of Health and Human Services, the agency reported Friday.
