Republican nominee Donald Trump said in a pre-taped interview that aired Sunday he would vote for a Democrat over former Ku Klux Klan Wizard David Duke in a hypothetical election match-up.
“Depending on who the Democrat, but the answer would be yes. Look, the answer is, as quick as you can say it. In fact, I went to answer you before you — because last time with another person in this position, I did it very quickly. And they said ‘he didn’t do it fast enough.’ Rebuked. Is that okay? Rebuked, done,” Trump told NBC “Meet the Press” moderator Chuck Todd.
Duke announced last week he is running for a U.S. Senate seat in Louisiana in order to give European Americans a greater voice.
But Duke’s race will not put Trump’s word on the line. As a resident and voter in New York, Trump is not allowed to vote in another state’s Senate election.
Trump’s denouncement of Duke comes days after former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who had been on the short list of Trump’s potential running mates, called on all Republicans to “repudiate this guy no matter what.”
In late February, Duke came out saying he would support Trump but walked back his statement later, saying it was not an endorsement of the then-GOP presidential candidate.
