New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio heads to Iowa next month

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is headed to Iowa next month to headline a political fundraiser, after reports from the summer that he was considering a presidential run in 2020.

The mayor will speak at Progress Iowa’s fifth annual Holiday Party on Dec. 19 and discuss the “future of the progressive movement” and efforts to fight the conservative agenda, the organization announced Monday.

“Iowans are speaking out and showing up to fight back against what conservatives are doing to their state and our county,” de Blasio said in a statement. “Standing up for quality public education, access to healthcare, and to make sure working families get a fair shot matters in Iowa and New York, and I can’t wait to discuss those ideas as well as how we can work together when I visit in December.”

Previous speakers at Progress Iowa’s Holiday Party include Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander, and former Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis.

Visits to Iowa by politicians typically fuel speculation about future presidential runs. But de Blasio, who was re-elected earlier this month, said in August he plans to serve his full four-year term.
