Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., isn’t old enough yet to be president of the United States, but Democrats like the sound of it.
Nearly 75 percent of Democrats and those who lean toward the party would consider voting for her if she were old enough to run, according to the results of an Axios/Survey Monkey poll released Tuesday.
The Constitution says anyone who is under the age of 35 is ineligible to be president. Ocasio-Cortez is 29 years old and won’t be eligible until the 2028 election.
Among the overall adult population, her greatest support comes from young people and minority populations. Sixty-nine percent of all 18- to 24-year-olds said they would at least consider voting for her, and 16 percent said they would “definitely” vote for her. Meanwhile, 17 percent of all Hispanics and 16 percent of all blacks said they would “definitely” vote for her, according to the poll results.
There is also some potential support for Ocasio-Cortez on the Republican side. Thirty percent of 18- to 24-year-olds said they would consider backing her. Zeroing in on nonwhite Republicans, 28 percent said the same.
The survey was conducted Jan. 16-18 and used a sample size of 2,277.
Ocasio-Cortez took the political scene by storm last year with an upset primary victory in a highly diverse New York City congressional district over incumbent Democrat Joe Crowley. The Democratic Socialist has since made a name for herself with her liberal platform, resistance to her party’s establishment, and biting tweets against critics in politics and the media.
