Snow contributes to fatal crash in Carroll

Nagging cold and a winter storm that dropped two inches of snow on Carroll County contributed Wednesday morning to the death of a Westminster man.

Henry Rogan Holt, of Bollinger Road, headed westbound during rush hour on Old Westminster Pike when his truck slid into the oncoming lane, struck a Ford F-250 pickup and ricocheted into a tree.

The impact sent Holt?s Chevrolet Silverado rolling down a hill, crushing and killing his son, Henry Shayne Holt, who had been jettisoned from the truck seconds earlier.

“The [victim?s] vehicle slid across the road due to snow, bounced off another vehicle, went back on its side of the road, hit a tree; the passenger was ejected and the vehicle then slid down a hillside and ran over the same passenger,” Maryland State Police Sgt.George Frazier said.

Police in Baltimore City and Baltimore, Howard and Harford counties reported no serious crashes and no injuries as of late Wednesday afternoon. In Anne Arundel County, officials reported more than a dozen fender benders, none resulting in injuries.

Less than a half-inch of snow was expected to fall in the region before night?s end Wednesday, and today?s forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 39 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow accumulation varied widely across the state, with the National Weather Service unofficially reporting 10 inches in Frostburg, two inches in Westminster and fewer than two inches in Baltimore City and Baltimore and Howard counties at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Henry Rogan Holt was listed in stable condition Wednesday evening after being transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for serious injuries, hospital officials said.

Two other vehicles were involved in the 8 a.m. wreck.

The Ford F-250, driven by Timmy Lee Milstreed, of Silver Meadow Lane in Carroll County, careened into an unoccupied Ford Explorer parked on the side of the road. Milstreed was treated at Carroll Hospital Center and released, hospital officials said.

A fourth vehicle, a Ford Focus, also struck the parked sport utility vehicle. The driver, Kristen Sullivan, of East Main Street in Westminster, was not injured, police said.
