Melania Trump just effectively dared “Insecure” star Issa Rae to cancel her own show.
Rae was quoted in a Glamour profile published Tuesday raving about Michelle Obama, who told her she loved “Insecure” when they met in 2017.
“It was like talking to my auntie. It bums me out that I will never have that feeling again of the First Family fucking with us so hard and getting us. If Melania [Trump] said that to me, I would be like, ‘Well, I guess it’s canceled. We’re not making this show. It’s not ours anymore,'” Rae asserted.
Looks like it’s not theirs anymore.
On Wednesday, the first lady’s communications director, Stephanie Grisham, tweeted an article about Rae’s comments with the caption, “Alert: FYI @IssaRae, @FLOTUS likes your show!”

It’s easy for celebrities to talk tough during friendly glossy magazine interviews, trafficking in amusingly hyperbolic rhetoric to signal the intensity of their politics. It’s much harder to live up to that rhetoric, especially when their self-interests are involved. And that’s what Melania Trump is calling out.
Rae, for her part, predictably dismissed Grisham’s tweet with a joke. “Insecure” fans can rest easy knowing the show isn’t going anywhere.
Melania or the double? https://t.co/x2KE3RmjDt

But the point remains— Rae was bluffing and Trump called her out on it. The statement was flipped into a spectacular self-own for Rae. Score one for Melania.
