Former MLB player agrees with Brett Favre that ‘woke left’ is hurting sports

Former MLB pitcher Micah Owings voiced his agreement with NFL legend Brett Favre, who expressed his disdain for the trend of politics in sports earlier this week.

“@BrettFavre Thanks for speaking up!! Have always been a fan & wish the Falcons would of kept you,” Owings said. “Brett, you nailed it with this one. Baseball and Sports ‘used to’ UNITE our Country! Thanks to the woke left, now sports is ripping us apart.”

Owings’s remarks came in response to comments Favre made on the podcast he co-hosts with TV host Eric Bolling, on which Favre lamented how political sports have become in recent years.

“I think both sides, for the most part, want to see it just remain about the sport, not about politics,” Favre said during the podcast. “At least, that’s my interpretation. I know when I turn on a game, I want to watch the game. I want to watch players play and teams win, lose, come from behind. I want to watch all the, you know, important parts of the game, not what’s going on outside of the game. And I think the general fan feels the same way.”

Like Favre, Owings has ties to Georgia, with Favre starting his professional career in Atlanta, while Owings is a native of the state. The state was recently at the center of a political controversy in sports after the MLB made the decision to pull the league’s All-Star Game from Atlanta in response to a new election security law critics have blasted as voter suppression.

The trend concerns Favre, who said sports should be valuable as something people can unite around.

“There’s always been differences. There’s always been issues within the world, within the country, within our states. But again, something has to unify us,” Favre said. “And I felt like the flag, standing patriotically — because blacks and whites and Hispanics have fought for this country and died for this country. It’s too bad.”
