Coming on the heels of a joint statement from Senators Lieberman, McCain, and Graham, this is another serious blow to the administration’s plan to overcome a key hurdle to closing Gitmo, i.e. what to do with all the Yemenis who can’t be tried and can’t be resettled anywhere else than their home country. The administration probably already knows that Yemen is no longer an option, but they haven’t yet admitted as much publicly. And we can be sure there is no Plan B. It took the administration nearly a year to put its ill-conceived Plan A together. So with Senator Diane Feinstein, the Chairwoman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, coming out against the plan…Obama’s got problems:
Of course Yemen was too unstable even before the attacks of September 11, 2001, but it’s good that senior Democrats in Congress are acknowledging as much now, despite so much political pressure to square the circle that is the Obama Gitmo policy. HT: the Steve Hayes Twitter feed
