GOP Nevada congressman Mark Amodei has expressed support for Democratic-led investigations that could result in the impeachment of President Trump.
Amodei refused to say whether he would vote to impeach Trump, but said of the potential probe and its ever-growing support, “put it through the process and see what happens.”
In a media conference call on Friday, Amodei said, “I’m a big fan of oversight, so let’s let the committees get to work and see where it goes,” he said. “Using government agencies to, if it’s proven, to put your finger on the scale of an election, I don’t think that’s right … If it turns out that it’s something along those lines, then there’s a problem.”
Amodei later clarified that he was not yet backing impeachment of Trump. In a statement, he chided a local publication, the Independent, for indicating that his comments to reporters were in support of impeachment. “In no way, shape, or form, did I indicate support for impeachment,” he said. The article was later updated.
The congressman shared comments from Democratic Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, who said of the impeachment probe, “We have to follow the facts and figure out what happened here.” The Democrat condemned the reporting of the Independent, singling out its reporter Humberto Sanchez by name.
“Anyone who reads Mr. Sanchez’s article and thinks that somehow there is a vote to convict before the process has played out — as called for by the resolution unanimously supported by everyone concerned — is simply, individual fantasy,” she said.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced an official impeachment inquiry on Tuesday, part of the spiraling controversy over a phone call Trump had with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during which he asked the foreign leader to probe former Vice President Joe Biden, his potential 2020 opponent.
