University of Maryland police are seeking assistance in identifying an individual caught on video by WBAL television cameras during rioting on April 4 following the Maryland women?s national championship win over Duke.
Police released seven photos Thursday of a white male suspect, who appears to be in his early20s, running toward a small fire and the camera. The photos can be found on the University of Maryland?s Public Safety Web site at www.umpd.umd.edu/civil_disorder_photos.cfm.
“He is a person of interest,” said campus police spokesman Capt. John Brandt. “He?s somebody we want to talk to in connection with the celebration, the destruction of property and a number of small fires of clothing, trash and furniture that were set on the University of Maryland campus.”
Several campus and Prince George?s County officers were assaulted with glass bottles during the melee, Brandt said. He said seven students have been identified by campus police and all have been referred to the judicial program on campus. Sanctions could include expulsion. No criminal charges have been filed against the students, but Brandt did not rule out that possibility.
Several thousand students rioted after the women?s team win its first-ever basketball title along Route 1 late into the night April 4 and early into the morning of April 5.
University of Maryland police are also searching for pictures of others involved in criminal conduct during the celebration.
