Former Pieces of F–k musician could take a House seat from GOP

From would-be sex therapist to musician in a band named Pieces of Fuck to Democratic nominee for Congress in Nebraska, Kara Eastman has had an interesting career trajectory.

Eastman is running in a competitive race to unseat Republican Rep. Don Bacon, and has the endorsements of Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., in addition to major national groups like EMILY’s List, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

The candidate can be heard opening up about her wandering career path in audio recorded at a Metropolitan Community College Board of Governors retreat. Eastman serves as vice chair of the board. “I have a clinical degree in social work and a specialization in sexual dysfunction treatment, so my path was going to be a sex therapist, obviously not doing that now,” she says in the recording, before adding, “and I was in a band in college called Pieces of Fuck.”

Reached by the Washington Examiner Thursday morning, Eastman’s communications director Heather Aliano replied, “Yes, Kara was in a performance art band in college by that name.” Aliano further confirmed Eastman was a singer for the group.

Eastman is running on a progressive platform, and her primary upset against a former congressman drew national headlines back in May. Bacon won the Omaha-area district by one percentage point in 2016, so the race is a subject of high interest for Democrats hoping to win back control of the House.

Though the exact meaning of Eastman’s band name remains an enigma, it’s still better than naming your group the Beatles.
