Cybercommission set for June meeting

The cybersecurity commission tasked with finding ways to improve the nation’s digital security is set to hold an open meeting in Berkeley, Calif., later this month, according to a notice published in the Federal Register on Friday.

The June 21 meeting will be the third for the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity since its February formation, which came from an executive order signed by President Obama. The session will include at least two panel discussions on cybersecurity challenges and ways for the private sector to collaborate with government on the issue, according to a tentative outline of the agenda.

The commission’s previous events included an initial April meeting at the Commerce Department and a May session in New York City. The next gathering looks to be the most accessible and wide-ranging to date.

The commission, which bills itself as a partnership between the public and private sector, came as part of a broader $19 billion cybersecurity overhaul requested by the president for the upcoming fiscal year. Its mandate includes finding ways to improve the federal cybersecurity workforce, improving security in the broadening realm of Internet-connected devices, and “educating” the public about best practices. The group is to publish its recommendations by Dec. 1.
