Associated Black Charities is hosting a gala tonight in which it hopes to make enough money to continue its ongoing support of the black community of Baltimore.

The theme of this year?s ABC Fundraising Gala is the Harlem Renaissance.

The organization hopes to make about $300,000 at the event, said Donna Fisher Lewis, ABC chief development officer.

“For the most part, we have a lot of community support,” said Lewis, who expects to see a lot of local politicians at the aala.

City Council President Sheila Dixon and Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith plan on attending.

“It?s a great organization,” Smith said. “It does wonderful work and I am proud to be part of its celebration.”

Dixon said she attends every year. “This organization has strived to identify resources and they have benefited greatly from this signature event,” she said.

Lewis said ABC funds and provides scholarships to small non-profits for “neighborhood revitalization.” ABC donates to large organizations, too, including Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland.

The gala will hold three rooms of entertainment, each with a sit-down dinner. There will be stand-up comedy, a jazz and blues concert, a silent auction and art show as well as the Cab Calloway Orchestra.
