White House chief of staff Ron Klain raised the possibility the Biden administration may yet again extend the federal student loan payment freeze, two months before it is supposed to expire.
Klain made the comments on the podcast Pod Save America, noting that federal student loan payments have been frozen for the entirety of the Biden presidency.
“The president is going to look at what we should do on student debt before the pause expires, or he’ll extend the pause,” Klain said. “Joe Biden right now is the only president in history where no one’s paid on their student loans for the entirety of his presidency.”
BIDEN ADMINISTRATION EXTENDS PAUSE ON STUDENT LOAN PAYMENTS THROUGH MAY 1
The student loan payment and interest freeze is currently set to expire on May 1. The freeze dates back to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and was first implemented by the Trump administration in March 2020. It has been extended multiple times since, including most recently in December 2021.

In his comments on the podcast, Klain left open the possibility that the Biden administration could enact some form of student loan forgiveness via executive order, a move liberal activists have been clamoring for since the president took office.

“The question [of] whether or not there’s some executive action [on] student debt forgiveness when the payments resume, is a decision we’re going to make before the payments resume,” Klain said.
