The idea of a nationwide soda tax is one that just won’t die for a lot of pro-nanny state Democrats.
Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) has introduced her legislation to tax sugary beverages yet again. Her bill would impose a tax of one cent per teaspoon of sweeteners like sugars and high fructose corn syrup, The Hill reported.
DeLauro plans for the revenue to go toward federal research on diabetes, obesity, tooth decay and other dietary health conditions.
“There is a clear relationship between sugar-sweetened beverages and a host of health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, obesity and tooth decay. We are at a crucial tipping point,” DeLauro said in a statement.
DeLauro introduced the same measure in the last Congress, but it didn’t go anywhere.
This idea is sure to make former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg happy.
