Former Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., stood up for freshman Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., after a national GOP committeeman said “dumb ass people” who left their ballots blank in the 2018 election helped Sinema secure a victory.
“No, @kyrstensinema won because she ran a good race and had a message that resonated with Arizona’s voters,” Flake tweeted. “The sooner we Republicans recognize this, the sooner we will we be in a position to win the next contest.”

The tweet was in response to an article from the Arizona Republic detailing GOP committeeman Bruce Ash’s criticism of Sinema.
“Simena looking more like Senator Madonna than the Senator Barbie Doll she advertised when she ran for election in 2018,” Ash said in a Facebook post Saturday. “Her politics and positions will lean further left than the dumb ass people on our side ever imagined when tens of thousands left their ballots blank in the McSally-Sinema election which led the way to her being seated in the U.S. Senate this past week.”
Sinema defeated Martha McSally in the November 2018 election, but McSally is now serving in the Senate because Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey selected her to fill the late Sen. John McCain’s seat.
