Bruce Smith admits to DUI Former Washington Redskins lineman Bruce Smith pleaded guilty to drunken driving Thursday, telling a Virginia Beach court that he wanted to own up to his mistake. Smith, 46, was fined $1,000 and given a 90-day suspended sentence. He had been convicted in lower court and appealed to a circuit court, and his retrial has been set for Thursday morning. Smith, the NFL’s all-time sack leader and Hall of Famer, played for the Buffalo Bills and the Redskins. He had two previous DUI arrests: A 1997 conviction was later dismissed, and he was acquitted in another case in 2003.

Baby sitter held at gunpoint

A baby sitter watching a toddler in Triangle was held at gunpoint by four men who stole a game system and a handgun from the home, Prince William County police said. Neither the baby sitter, nor the toddler was injured as the robbers searched the home Wednesday morning, police said. Three of the suspects were white men and one was a black man. All were wearing dark clothes and had their faces covered with black scarves. A fifth man drove the getaway car, a dark green sport utility vehicle.

Bomb scare shuts down Embassy Row

D.C. police shut down Massachusetts Avenue on Thursday afternoon to inspect a suspicious envelope that was dropped off at the British Embassy guard booth, police said. An unknown person dropped the unlabeled envelope off with the guard at 2:30 p.m. and the guard flagged down a D.C. police officer for help, authorities said. D.C. police hazardous materials officials declared the envelope safe.

Baileys Crossroads bank robbed

A Wachovia bank in Baileys Crossroads was robbed by two armed men, Fairfax County police said. Around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, two men entered the Wachovia bank at 5797 Leesburg Pike and demanded cash. They fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was injured.
