Rangers recovered the body of a 26-year-old woman who witnesses said fell in a canyon at Zion National Park in Utah over the weekend.
Search and rescue crews responded to the scene after park visitors reported seeing a woman fall 50-80 feet Saturday afternoon at Mystery Canyon, according to a National Park Service press release
Officials brought a helicopter, though crews could not lift the woman out due to the narrow canyon walls. Medics eventually got to the woman, but she succumbed to her injuries shortly after, NPS said.
Officials said a preliminary investigation showed the woman’s injuries match those consistent with high-elevation falls. NPS is investigating the incident, with Washington County Sheriff’s Office taking the lead.
Some parts of the park were closed on Sunday due to the rescue effort.
Officials have not revealed the woman’s name.
Another person died in Zion National Park in March after falling off Angels Landing, which is known for being a narrow trail with built-in chains along the rocky path to aid hikers traveling to the peak.
