Federal immigration agents arrested a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient in Seattle last week as part of national immigration enforcement operations. The incident, reported on Tuesday, is the first known time officers have taken into custody a non-U.S. citizen who had legal permission from the Obama administration to remain in the country.
Daniel Ramirez Medina, 23, illegally entered the U.S. from Mexico as a child and was later given a work permit to stay. While visiting his father’s home late last week, U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement officers arrived to arrest his father. The son, who was visiting from Tacoma, Wash., does not have a criminal record, but was also picked up despite having received temporary permission to live and work legally in the country under DACA, which applies to 750,000 people with similar cases.
