Resignation effect? Boehner’s approval rating rises

After calling it quits, House Speaker John Boehner has seen a rise in his approval rating.

Roughly three in 10 (31 percent) of those surveyed in a new Gallup survey said they have a favorable opinion of the Ohio Republican, up from 23 percent in August. This mark is his best since April 2014.

Forty-five percent said they see him in an unfavorable light. Among self-identified Republicans, Boehner’s approval remained at 36 percent, down just 1 percentage point from August. However, among Democrats, his approval surged from 19 percent in August to 30 percent in October. And 29 percent of independents say they view him favorably, a 17 percentage point jump since August.

Boehner announced late last month he would resign at the end of October. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was set to succeed Boehner, but he suddenly dropped out of the running last week.

The telephone-based poll of roughly 1,000 adults nationwide was conducted Oct. 7-11 with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
