Voters impressed with Donald Trump’s alleged pivot to a milder tone are confused because they adapted to Trump’s “absurdity,” CNN commentator Van Jones says.
“They’re saying Donald Trump has changed — that they have tamed him,” Jones said following a report this week that senior Trump aide Paul Manafort suggested the billionaire businessman will begin revealing his real personality. Manafort said the controversial candidate seen in interviews, debates and at campaign rallies is not the real Trump, according to the report.
“That’s why they are able to get behind him now,” Jones said on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday night. “He’s been able to get us to adapt to absurdity.”
“The fact that he doesn’t drop trou at one press conference means he should be on Mount Rushmore,” Jones said. “It’s completely insane that we are even having a conversation about him.”
Maher agreed, saying Trump’s “greatest ability” is getting people to overlook his flaws. The pointed a week last month in which Trump suggested women should be punished for abortions and that countries like South Korea and Japan should have nuclear weapons to protect themselves from threats like North Korea.
Maher said Trump doesn’t have to change his personality because Trump is merely portraying a “character.” He compared Trump to stand-up comedian Andrew Dice Clay, who is known for bombastic and sexist humor.
