A-Rod’s homer, Rays run explosion, Tiger’s dinner plans and bad math

This past weekend there were some great moments that were made even better by the broadcasters doing the events. MASN’s Gary Thorne on the call of Alex Rodriguez’s first pitch three-run homer Friday night &raquo  “As you can clearly hear the fans are booing Alex as he walks to the plate. There are some Yankees fans with signs of support. So this is his first plate appearance of the 2009 season, two on, the pitch, swing, long drive, deep left center field and it is gone. Home run, Alex Rodriguez. I think that answers any question about how long it will take him to get back in the groove. The answer is: one pitch.”

FOX’s Tim McCarver, during Saturday’s Red Sox-Rays game, where Tampa Bay had broken the game open with a six-run fourth and five-run fifth &raquo  “Well here in the fifth we have good news and bad news for Red Sox fans. The bad news is Pat Burrell is the 16th man to bat in less than two innings. The good news is the Sox have only used two pitchers.”

NBC Sports’ Jimmy Roberts speaking to Tiger Woods after his third round 70 put him in contention at The Players Championship &raquo  “I guess you will now head over to the practice tee to work on your iron shots, then over to the putting green to practice some putts?” Tigers’ reply: “No I am headed inside to have a nice big dinner, I am really hungry.”

Comcast SportsNet Caps analyst Craig Laughlin, on the odds of Washington winning their playoff series after a crushing 4-3 overtime defeat in Saturday’s Game 5 &raquo  “Pittsburgh is now up 3 games to 2 with Game 6 in their place Monday. Eighty-one percent of the time the team that wins Game 5 goes on to win the series. Our only hope is the Caps put this loss behind them, win the next two and that the Pens are bad at math.”
