President Obama deserves a second term

Re: “Second term will reveal Obama’s real agenda,” From Readers, April 3

Nelson Marans’ slam at President Obama was totally off target.

Obama brought the U.S. back from the abyss of the Bush recession, started two years of steady job growth, nailed Osama bin Laden, saved the U.S. auto industry, ended our military role in Iraq, took a major step to improve health care, gave Americans more hope for the future, and improved our international image. He merits a second term.

More needs to be done, but the flip-flopping 1-percenter Mitt Romney is not the guy to do it.

Justice Department should intervene in Trayvon case

Re: “Trayvon Martin case is not about race,” From Readers, April 2

Trayvon Martin was gunned down on February 26 after being stalked and confronted by self-appointed neighborhood watch captain. Despite being instructed by a 911 operator not to follow Martin, George Zimmerman proceeded to confront and fatally shoot him in the chest.

Trayvon Martin was an innocent citizen going about his business when he was hunted down. Why should there be any more delay in arresting and charging Zimmerman with murder?

The Sanford Police Department has a history of not prosecuting when the victim is black. In 2010, the white son of a Sanford police lieutenant was also let go after assaulting a homeless black man outside a downtown bar. It is clear to any fair-minded person that by their actions, Sanford’s police and prosecutors are not able to assure us that justice will be served.

I join all other citizens who are asking the Department of Justice to ensure that Zimmerman is arrested and charged, and that a balanced and fair trial takes place to ensure that due process of law and justice runs its full course.

Transportation Trust Fund should get lottery windfall

Re: “Maryland ticket holder will share $640m jackpot,” April 1

Maryland is supposed to receive $13 million in taxes from the latest lottery winner in Baltimore. That amount is a drop in the bucket compared to what was previously in the now depleted Transportation Trust Fund.

Considering his track record, I’m not optimistic that Gov. Martin O’Malley will use the lottery winner’s taxes (or any amount) to replenish that fund. He’d rather raise taxes to offset incompetent state spending.

However, if all of this “free” lottery money is not put into the transportation fund, which would be the right thing to do, then the year to elect a new governor can’t come fast enough for me.
