De Rosario named MLS player of the week for 2nd consecutive week

So D.C. United midfielder/forward Dwayne De Rosario was named MLS player of the week for the second straight week after scoring all three of United’s goals in last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Toronto FC – which, I was reminded by the highlights, was playing at one point with three designated players vs. no DPs and a man-down D.C.

In any case, watch the highlights, and it’s clear that De Rosario could’ve had at least five goals, not just a hat trick. But it also seems relevant to point out that the second and third goals that he did score were courtesy of Toronto defender Andy Iro, who allowed a Chris Pontius cross through his legs and then shielded his way into drawn penalty kick by United midfielder Austin Da Luz. There’ve been many a discussion over the value of PKs around RFK, given the hefty goal tally for Charlie Davies this season, one that doesn’t necessarily reflect how well he’s played.

In any case, for my money, De Rosario’s two strikes against San Jose two weeks ago – which earned him the first MLS POW award – were equally, if not more impressive.

It’s worth noting that De Rosario, who has nine goals total this season from time with three different teams, intentionally did not celebrate his goals against Toronto in traditional fashion as a nod of respect to the third former team in a row that he’s tallied against since being acquired by D.C. United earlier this summer.
