Democrats declare Clinton still won Kentucky

After a re-canvass of Kentucky Democratic primary votes requested by Bernie Sanders, the state party declared that Hillary Clinton’s victory will stand.

“No changes to the results as certified by the counties last week,” Kentucky Secretary of State Alison L. Grimes tweeted on Thursday. She added that Clinton is still the “unofficial winner” of the Kentucky primary with a margin of 1,911 votes. The state’s Board of Elections will certify the final results of the re-canvass on May 31.

Sanders had called for the re-examination of the primary vote, following the exceedingly close contest in which Clinton won by .5 percent. This was a big dropoff from her 35-point win in the state’s 2008 primary. Although the re-canvass results didn’t change anything for his campaign, Sanders still said he was “pleased” by his supporters’ efforts.

“We accept the results in Kentucky. We are very pleased that we split the delegates in a state with a closed primary in which independents cannot vote and where Secretary Clinton defeated Barack Obama by 35 points in 2008,” Sanders wrote in a statement on Thursday. “I thank the people of Kentucky very much for their support.”
