Zipcar raised its prices in D.C. starting this month, even as it gained two competitors in Car2Go and Hertz’s On Demand.
The popular car-sharing company, which launched in 2000 and now has about 800 vehicles in the D.C. area, raised its standard rates Monday by 1.5 percent to 2.5 percent, depending on the car.
“We do our best to keep Zipcar affordable for everyone, but rising operating costs occasionally require that we adjust our rates. Zipcar is still a tremendous value compared to car ownership when you consider car payments, insurance, maintenance, gas, and parking,” said Zipcar spokeswoman Jessica Margolis-Pineo in a statement.
Prices for individual accounts now range from $8 to $12 per hour on most cars.
Zipcar also recently debuted its van rental service, Zipvan, in the D.C. area. Users can now rent Ford E-150s, large white cargo vans, starting at $15.75 per hour. The service launched in D.C. last month after being tested in San Francisco.
