DCIAA playoff race taking shape

The playoff picture in the DCIAA is slowly clearing up, thanks in large part to Coolidge’s forfeit of a win at Wilson on Oct. 5. The Colts used an ineligible player in that contest, according to DCIAA executive director Allen Chin, so Wilson (5-3, 2-1 DCIAA East) gets the victory and the inside track to a postseason berth. The top two teams in each division qualify. Wilson has just one division game left against Theodore Roosevelt (4-4, 1-1), which was competitive in a 26-12 loss to first-place Dunbar (7-2, 3-0) earlier this month. Coolidge (5-4, 0-2) needs to beat Cardozo (3-5, 0-2) and Theodore Roosevelt and hope Wilson slips. The Colts are appealing the forfeit decision, but likely won’t hear anything until Wednesday, according to coach Jason Lane.

In the DCIAA West, H.D. Woodson (5-3, 3-0) is in first place. The second playoff spot will come down to Friday’s game between Southeast, D.C. rivals Ballou (4-4, 2-1) and Anacostia (3-6, 2-1). The Knights are the defending DCIAA champions. Both teams have already lost to H.D. Woodson this month.

WCAC » After one-point losses to McNamara and DeMatha, Gonzaga (3-4, 2-3) is likely to be the odd team out when the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference playoffs begin Nov. 9. To have a shot at a berth, Gonzaga needs wins over O’Connell and St. John’s and help. DeMatha, gunning for its fifth straight WCAC title, has clinched a berth and can grab the No. 1 seed with wins over McNamara (5-3, 4-2) and Good Counsel (7-1, 4-1). Good Counsel can clinch a berth with a win at Paul VI Friday. St. John’s (5-2, 4-1) will earn a berth with a win at Carroll Saturday.

IAC » St. Albans (6-1, 2-0) and Landon (4-3, 2-0) are on a collision course to meet for the crown in the season finale, Oct. 10. St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (5-2, 1-1) could get into the picture with a win over Albans on Nov. 4. If that happens, and Albans were to defeat Landon, there would be a three-way tie.
