Tim Ryan accrues whopping $17 million in third-quarter campaign haul

Ohio Senate hopeful Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) reportedly hauled a whopping $17.2 million in campaign funds during the third quarter, nearly doubling his campaign’s prior record.

About 95% of those funds derived from small donations under $100 and were accrued between July 1 and the end of September, his campaign revealed, according to the Hill. Ryan took a victory lap on the news, declaring that he will win in November despite lagging behind his Republican rival in polling.

“$17.2 million. To every person who dug deep and chipped in what you could, thank you. When we win on November 8th, it’ll be because of you: the strongest grassroots team Ohio has ever seen,” Ryan proclaimed on Twitter.

Although it is not clear how much cash he has on hand as the midterm elections enter the final sprint, he reported about $3.6 million on hand in his most recent filing, according to the outlet.

Ryan’s campaign disclosure comes ahead of the Oct. 15 filing deadline with the Federal Election Commission. A number of candidates, such as Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and others, have released their numbers early to woo supporters and try to show backers that momentum is on their side.

During his previous campaign cash pull, Ryan amassed roughly $9.1 million, according to fillings for the second quarter. His rival, Republican J.D. Vance, an author and businessman, recently divulged that he had a smaller $630,000 on hand after the second quarter.

Recently, billionaire GOP megadonor Peter Thiel huddled with allies and contended that he viewed Vance’s race as “done,” hinting that he no longer plans to open his coffers to Vance.

Meanwhile, Vance and Ryan are running neck and neck in polling, with Vance pulling slightly ahead, touting a 1.2-percentage-point edge in the latest polling aggregate from RealClearPolitics.

As the race heats up, Ryan recently revealed that he has no plans to invite President Joe Biden to stump for him on the campaign trail.

“I’m really not inviting anybody,” Ryan explained. “[Vance has] got to invite everybody to prop him up. It’s like, look, brother, you’re in a competition. You’re in a race. Stand on your own two feet. And that’s what I’m doing. I’m standing on my own two feet. I will be the mouthpiece.”
