DNC loses its national political director

The Democratic National Committee’s national political director will reportedly step down from his position on Friday, less than two months before Democrats head to Philadelphia for their nominating convention.

According to Recode, Raul Alvillar is preparing to accept a government relations position in the tech industry, most likely in Silicon Valley. Alvillar was the first Latino to hold the title of political director for the committee and previously served as the LGBT community liaison to the Obama administration.

Like Alvillar, a handful of other Democratic operatives have left their positions in politics to join private-sector startups.

President Obama’s former campaign manager David Plouffe joined Uber as the company’s policy and strategy chief in 2014, while Dan Pfeiffer, Obama’s former communications director, left the White House to join the crowdsourcing website GoFundMe last December.

The DNC has yet to comment on Alvillar’s departure and Alvillar himself has not publicly addressed the matter.
