President Trump and Republican congressional leaders may have disagreements over policies, but their personal relationships are “fine,” press secretary Sarah Sanders said Thursday.
“I think the relationships are fine,” Sanders told reporters at the White House. “Certainly, there are going to be some policy differences.”
Sanders’ comments came just hours after Trump fired off a new wave of attacks against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan. Trump blamed McConnell for allowing healthcare talks to collapse late last month and took aim at Ryan for allowing the debt ceiling debate to become a “mess” in a series of tweets.
Earlier this week, Trump stirred new tensions with congressional Republicans by threatening to shut down the government in September if he does not secure funding for the border wall in the spending bill.
Ryan and other members quickly downplayed the possibility of pursuing a government shutdown.
“The president has talked pretty extensively about this. He campaigned on the wall,” Sanders said. “He’s going to make sure that that gets done and he’ll continue to fight for that funding.”
