Massive waves crashed a wedding in Hawaii over the weekend, wiping out the dance floor, tables, and a few boxes, after a tropical storm blew through the islands.
The wedding couple, Dillon and Riley Murphy, said they were initially preparing for Tropical Storm Darby to bring rain during the wedding at Hulihe’e Palace in Kailua-Kona on Saturday. But they did not anticipate the waves interrupting the festivities.

“We were so worried about the remnants of Darby and like, ‘Are we going to get rainfall?'” Riley Murphy told the local outlet, KHON-TV. “[We] never really took into account that the high surf might impact our wedding as well.”

The waves came towering down on the venue moments before the ceremony was set to begin, a guest told the Guardian. But the couple decided to wait until after the ceremony to clean up the area.
All the guests and the wedding cake were accounted for and safe, the couple said, and guests even danced in the mud after the cleanup.
“Just the analogy of, you know, life and storms hit. And it’s just, it’s so important to come together and to have all of our family and our loved ones there, and it just made it very special,” Riley Murphy said.
Dillon Murphy said people were able to get pictures of the waves splashing, which made the ceremony even more memorable.

Waves reached over 20 feet high and flooded other businesses and houses over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
Only one serious injury occurred from the waves, and it was when a surfer received a laceration to the back of his head, Hawaiian officials said. Lifeguards and rescue teams conducted at least 1,960 rescues on the island of Oahu alone on Saturday and Sunday, according to the Guardian.
