Two pilots are dead after a Navy training plane crashed into a residential Alabama neighborhood.
The T-6B Texas II trainer aircraft took off from Florida’s Naval Air Station Whiting Field on Friday and crashed at about 5 p.m. in a neighborhood of the Gulf Coast city of Foley, Alabama. U.S. Naval Air Forces said in a statement that no civilians were hurt or killed in the crash.
The crash is currently under investigation, and the names of the two pilots who were killed will not be released until 24 hours after their next-of-kin are notified.
“It is with a heavy heart that we mourn two of our pilots who lost their lives during an aircraft crash in Alabama today. Our deepest sympathy goes to their family and friends at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Shipmates. We have the watch,” the Chief of Naval Air Training said in a Friday night Facebook post.
Foley Fire Chief Joey Darby told the Associated Press that when his crew arrived at the scene of the crash, they had to grapple with a “large volume of fire” that had consumed a house and several vehicles. No firefighters were hurt battling the blaze.
It is not immediately clear what caused the crash, and an investigation into the matter is underway.
