Six D.C. schools to shake up staff

Six D.C. public schools with long histories of failing students will force all teachers and staff to reapply for their positions this spring, to comply with federal reform efforts.

The process is called “reconstitution,” and it will take place at Davis (Ward 7), Garfield (Ward and Stanton (Ward elementary schools, Ballou Senior High (Ward 8), Hamilton special education school, and Luke C. Moore Academy for students at risk of dropping out.

Teachers who are not rehired will join an “excess” pool, and may wind up among the first D.C. Public Schools employees to take the buyout provisions detailed in the teachers contract passed earlier this month.

Stanton Elementary will partner with Philadelphia-based Scholar Academies under another federal provision to improve school performance.

“When schools do not meet [high] standards, we will work together and take aggressive measures,” said D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty.
