Republican Rep. Andy Biggs says he is strongly considering a run against Arizona’s freshman Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Kelly because the western state needs representation from at least one GOP senator, given its political demographics.
“What the deal is, I am concerned for a lot of reasons with Mr. Kelly as our senator, so I’m looking at that seat. I don’t even know if I’m a viable candidate, so I’m looking at it,” Biggs told the Washington Examiner.

The Arizona Republican added, “He’s a Bernie Sanders supporter. He’s led one of the most anti-gun groups in the nation. There’s lot’s of reasons to look at that. Plus, we need to get that seat back here. If Arizona is really a 50-50 state. Then we need one senator of each.”
Biggs, who won his third term last cycle and represents Arizona’s 5th Congressional District in Mesa, is the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus and first showed interest in the upper chamber during an interview with the Hill last November after Kelly defeated former Arizona Republican Sen. Martha McSally in a special election.
The Arizona Democrat won the race by 2% of the votes cast. Kelly is now up for reelection in 2022 in the seat once held by Republican John McCain.
