El Paso County Commissioner Darryl Glenn won a five-way Republican primary Tuesday to proceed to the general election for a seat held by incumbent Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo.
Glenn was declared the winner shortly before 8 p.m. local time.
Glenn had relied heavily on a grassroots campaign and only had volunteers on his staff. He had entered the primary race with a mere $50,000 cash on hand, but received financial support from Tea Party super PACs.
But endorsements from Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin were likely contributing factors to Glenn’s primary win.
Bennet has a major edge going into the November election with $5.7 million in the bank. But major upsets by Tea Party candidates like Virginia Rep. Dave Brat who beat out House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and Ohio Rep. Warren Davidson who replaced House Speaker John Boehner, are a reminder voters are not respecters of ad budgets.
