Judge Neil Gorsuch said Tuesday that he is “open” to having cameras in the Supreme Court but declined to take a position on televising open proceedings.
When Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar asked about cameras in the courtroom during Tuesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Gorsuch suggested he would consider arguments for and against adding cameras as he would treat “any other case or controversy.”
“I come to it with an open mind,” Gorsuch said about adding cameras on Tuesday. “It’s not a question that I confess I’ve given a great deal of thought to.”
Senators have proposed multiple bills about adding cameras to federal courts and the Supreme Court, with companion legislation moving through the House. Gorsuch’s “open mind” toward adding cameras differs greatly from the late Justice Antonin Scalia, whose seat Gorsuch is looking to fill. Scalia staunchly opposed adding cameras.
