Though he hasn’t played many tournaments in the D.C. area, Tiger Woods has provided several memorable moments here. Here are the top five:
5. Tiger mania was at its peak in 1997 when the U.S. Open came to Congressional, two months after his historic victory at the Masters. Woods played well but never made a run at the lead, finishing tied for 19th.
4. Resplendent in a gray suit and lavender shirt and tie, Woods announced at the National Press Club on March 7, 2007, that his foundation would host the AT&T National, bringing PGA Tour golf back to Washington after it had lost the Booz Allen Classic.
3. In the 2000 Presidents Cup at Robert Trent Jones, huge crowds came to watch Woods help the U.S. dominate, 21-10. In Sunday singles, Woods topped Vijay Singh in satisfying fashion, considering that Singh’s caddie showed up with a hat with “Tiger Who” stitched across the back.
2. In the second round of the inaugural 2007 AT&T National, Woods electrified a huge crowd with a birdie-birdie-birdie finish on his way to a 66. So many fans were following the final few holes, they were watching from parallel fairways, in one of the most amazing scenes in D.C. golf history.
1. In the final round of the 2009 AT&T National, Woods shot 67 to hold off Hunter Mahan, who shot a 62. In a humorous ceremony on the 18th green, Woods presented himself the trophy, asking himself how it felt to win.
