Amid mask drama, Marjorie Taylor Greene claims Sotomayor ‘not fit to serve’ on Supreme Court

In response to a report of a disagreement about face masks between Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Sonia Sotomayor, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene took to social media to claim the latter “is not fit to serve on the Supreme Court and should step down.”

NPR reported this week that Chief Justice John Roberts asked the justices to wear masks during arguments, knowing Sotomayor has diabetes and was concerned about the risk of COVID-19. The report said all the justices did so except for Gorsuch, prompting Sotomayor to join arguments virtually.

The court, which works to maintain an air of collegiality among the justices, issued rare statements denying the report. In a joint statement attributed to Sotomayor and Gorsuch, the justices said the report “surprised us.”

ROBERTS SAYS HE DID NOT ASK GORSUCH ‘OR ANY OTHER JUSTICES’ TO MASK UP ON SUPREME COURT BENCH

“It is false,” the statement said. “While we may sometimes disagree about the law, we are warm colleagues and friends.”

The court also issued a statement from Roberts, who said, “I did not request Justice Gorsuch or any other Justice to wear a mask on the bench.”

Amid the drama, Greene posted on GETTR that “if Justice Sotomayor is too ‘at risk’ to be around Justice Gorsuch without his mask on, then Sotomayer is not fit to serve on the Supreme Court and should step down.”

“Stop punishing healthy people with masking and vaccine mandates,” the Georgia Republican wrote. “It’s time to either trust your vaccines and boosters and leave the rest of us alone OR shelter in place to protect your fragile health until you feel safe enough to come back out into a fully functioning normal society.”

Greene also argued, “Unvaccinated and unmasked people are NOT responsible for the state of others [sic] health.”

Greene’s personal account on Twitter, a more prominent social media platform, was suspended after the company said she violated its policies on spreading misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic. She has publicly stated she is unvaccinated and has flouted the House’s rules requiring masks on the House floor, raking up thousands of dollars in fines.
