This Election Day your federal government is making sure to only focus on the most pressing issues of our time, like edible sea snails.
Federal regulators denied a request by environmental groups Tuesday regarding the status of the queen conch sea snail.
The National Marine Fisheries Service declined to list the queen conch sea snail as threatened or as an endangered species, despite the snails dwindling numbers.
The snails’ shells are often sold to tourists and the soft-bodied snail is typically served raw on top of a salad or is battered and fried.
But the conch grow slowly and WildEarth Guardians worried about the species being over-fished. In February, the group filed a petition seeking endangered species protections for the snail.
The National Marine Fisheries Service said the queen conch is still found throughout a broad geographic range.
“There is little evidence to suggest that disease or predation is contributing to increasing the risk of extinction of the species,” the agency’s response said.
Basically, the federal government wants you to enjoy your seafood after your vote.
