PHILADELPHIA — 2020 hopeful Julián Castro refused to hold a baby after rival candidate Kirsten Gillibrand cradled a child during the same forum of Democratic candidates.
“Do you want to go hold that baby?” a moderator at Netroots Nation asked Castro on Saturday when an activist came on stage with her child to ask the former Housing and Urban Development secretary a question.
“I’m not going to be the typical politician,” Castro said to a mix of laughs and boos. “I’ve been shaking a million hands. I don’t want to hold her baby.”
Gillibrand, a senator from New York, appeared on stage before Castro and walked over to the podium to hold another activist’s baby while the mother asked her a question.
