A 13-year-old D.C. middle school student was arrested Tuesday after officials said he bought an explosive device to campus.

School security at Jefferson Middle School found the device in a student’s book bag as students arrived Tuesday morning to the school at 801 7th Street SW, said D.C. schools spokesman Frederick Lewis said in a release. The device was described as “destructive.”

School officials are recommending that the student be expelled for possession of fireworks or explosives, Lewis said. The student will not be allowed to return pending the expulsion proceedings, Lewis said.
