House Democrats out-raise Republicans one month into new Congress

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee out-raised their Republican counterpart by $1.8 million during its first month of majority control, according to new Federal Election Commission reports.

The filing, released Thursday, shows the DCCC — the arm of the House Democrats dedicated to protecting their majority — brought in $6.9 million in total contributions during January. By contrast, the National Republican Congressional Committee, representing the House minority for the first time in more than eight years, raked in $4.2 million in total contributions in the same time.

The campaign committee, now being led by Illinois Rep. Cheri Bustos, has seen a steady increase in campaign contributions in recent years, after falling woefully behind during the Tea Party wave that crested in 2010, when the Republicans reclaimed a majority.

The NRCC leadership got off to a rocky start at the beginning of this Congress, with New York Rep. Elise Stefanik creating her own PAC dedicated to elected more women in GOP seats, an initiative snubbed by the new NRCC chairman, Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer.
