Good Charlotte’s ‘Cardiology’ full of heart

Think of Good Charlotte’s new album, “Cardiology,” as the return to their roots, both musically and personally. The songs on the album showcase what Benji and Joel Madden and their band mates do best: share observations in can’t-get-the-tunes-outta-my-head rock songs.

Consider “Sex on the Radio,” a pop-filled romp about worshiping a singer who — surprise! — has a song on the radio.

Even on “Like It’s Her Birthday,” a song about infidelity, the brothers Madden keep the tap-on-the-dashboard beats and harmonies flowing.

Perhaps what sets Good Charlotte’s music apart is that despite their rock royalty status, they have never moved that far away from their Maryland sensibilities.

Doubtful? Read the liner notes on the album and Benji Madden’s closing message.

“Sometimes you wonder if anyone even see those,” Madden said. “Thank you, so much, for reading them. That’s really how we feel.”

It shows.
